Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) Specialists serving Skipton and the surrounding areas.

PAT testing or portable appliance testing is an important part of any health & safety policy.

The Regulations

The Electricity at Work Act 1989 states that ‘As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as reasonably practicable, such danger.’

In the event of an electrical accident, liability rests with the person responsible for the safety of employees and members of the public.  Failure to comply with adequate testing regulations can result in legal action being taken against you and problems with insurance cover.

The guidance given by the IET requires:-

A programme of visual checks by the user (before they use it).

Regular inspections by a competent person.

Electrical testing carried out by a person competent in the safe use of the equipment and who knows how to interpret the results obtained.

Records must be kept for both the regular visual inspection and the electrical testing, along with any faults reported by the user.

The frequency of these checks depends on the type of equipment and the environment in which it is used.  This responsibility lies with the ‘responsible person’.

The reports have to show a unique reference number for each item, the room that it is used in, the serial number (if present), the date of the inspection, results of the tests and the date of the next test.  This report has to be made available to the person doing any subsequent testing – this will help show any trends which need checking.

Where needs to be tested?

All premises that are used for work or where the public may enter are covered by these regulations.

For example:-

Shops, factories, residential homes, offices, hotels, schools, etc.

What needs to be tested?

Most equipment connected to the mains by a plug has to be inspected and tested at regular intervals.
